Lagrima by Tárrega

LAGRIMA

When I study, between the pieces I'm working, I like to review something that I played in the early years of my studies, to find inspiration, to be moved by the beauty of simplicity. Let me be clear, I don't think that Tárrega's music is easy to play, indeed. It is a repertoire that requires extraordinary skill, in my opinion. For example, Lagrima, a song that many people consider simple, requires a delicacy, a musical "legato", a lightness of gestures that is really difficult to obtain.

On the various occasions in which I have been teaching it during a masterclass, the pupils were not aware of the history behind this small prelude, intimately linked to a tragic event in the life of Villareal's master and which certainly helps to understand the meaning .

In December 1891, coming home after a series of concerts in Majorca, the Maestro discovered that his four-year-old daughter Concepción, had passed away prematurely.

In the piece, personally, I have always felt that Tárrega painted two distinct moods with great sensitivity. On one hand, the innocence and purity of the child; on the other, the anger and impotence that must be felt of this fatal event. Tárrega kept a lock of her hair into his guitar-case until the end of his life. Whenever I proposed it as an encore in public, I always joined Lagrima with one of the small pieces contained in Schumann's "Album for the Youth". In this video I proposed them together.

Quando studio, tra un brano e l'altro mi piace ripassare qualcosa che ho suonato nei primi anni di studio, per trovare ispirazione, per commuovermi di fronte alla bellezza della semplicità. Sia ben chiaro, non penso minimamente che la musica di Tárrega sia facile da suonare, anzi. E' un repertorio che richiede una maestria straordinaria, a mio avviso. Lagrima ad esempio, brano che sicuramente molti reputano semplice, richiede una delicatezza, un legato, una leggerezza del gesto davvero difficili da ottenere.

Nelle varie occasioni in cui mi è stato sottoposto durante una masterclass, quasi sempre l'allievo non sapeva nulla della storia che sta dietro a questo piccolo preludio, intimamente legato ad un tragico evento nella vita del maestro di Villareal e che sicuramente, aiuta a capirne il significato.

Nel dicembre del 1891, al suo rientro a casa dopo una serie di concerti a Majorca, il Maestro scoprì che la figlia Concepción di quattro anni era prematuramente venuta a mancare.

Nel brano, personalmente, ho sempre sentito che Tárrega ha dipinto con grande sensibilità due distinti stati. Da una parte, l’innocenza e la purezza della bimba; dall’altra, la rabbia e l’impotenza che deve aver provato di fronte a questo funesto evento. Tárrega custodì fino alla fine dei suoi giorni una ciocca di capelli della piccola nella custodia della sua chitarra. Ogni volta che l'ho proposto in pubblico come bis, ho sempre affiancato Lagrima ad uno dei piccoli brani contenuti nell'"Album per la gioventù" di Schumann. In questo video, li ripropongo insieme.
